Conductor, cellist and composer Christian Benda is a descendant of the
Czech Benda composers dynasty of the 18th century and a member of the
longest family of musicians in music history. He received his
professional training within his family where the musical tradition was
maintained without interruption through three centuries.
Benda appears in music centers such as Paris, Vienna, London, Budapest,
Prague, Warshaw, Bucharest, Hong-Kong, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, and is
invited by the music festivals of Schwetzingen (Germany), Echternach
(Luxemburg), La Roque d'Anthéron (France) and Paris (Cité de la Musique),
as well as Prague Spring, George Enescu Bucharest, Wratislavia Cantans
(Poland), Campos do Jordao (Brazil), Hong Kong Arts Festival, Klangbogen
Vienna and Wiener Festwochen, Styriarte and Steirischer Herbst
(Austria).
A passionate of vocal repertoire, Christian Benda conducts vocalists
such as Barbara Hendricks, Cheryl Studer, Simon Estes, and Renee
Fleming. With Barbara Hendricks, he toured America, Europe and Asia.
Christian Benda has been invited to conduct the commemoration concerts
for President Vaclav Havel with Renée Fleming and the Prague Symphony
Orchestra. Among the artists having performed with him, we find Lazar
Berman, Paul Badura-Skoda, Michel Béroff, Till Fellner, François-René
Duchâble, Michaïl Rudy, Cristina Ortiz, Josef Suk, Vladimir Spivakov
with whom he performed on the cello Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante,
Pierre Amoyal, Bruno Giuranna, Paul Tortelier, Boris Pergamenschikow and
the actress Andrea Jonasson.
He made productions for TV Cultura (Brazil), the Czech, Polish,
Slovenian, Serbian and Hungarian Televisions, the Télévision Suisse
Romande, the SF DRS Swiss German Television (documentary film: The Benda
family nowadays), and recorded for the BBC, Radio Luxemburg, Radio
France, ORF, Hessischer Rundfunk and SWR, Radio Svizzera Italiana. His
CD recordings are regularly radio broadcasted all over the world.
From Bach to the music of the 20iest century Benda's numerous CDs
include the complete works for piano and orchestra by Frank Martin with
Paul Badura-Skoda (Bestenliste der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik),
Haydn's violin concertos with Jean-Jacques Kantorow, J.S. Bach's Musical
Offering, the Hamburg Symphonies by C.P.E. Bach, symphonic works by
Malipiero and Casella, as well as recordings of his ancestors' works,
notably Jiri Antonin Benda's symphonies and melodramas with the Prague
Chamber Orchestra - together with two volumes of violin and viola
concertos by Frantisek and Jan Jiri Benda with Josef Suk as soloist. As
a cellist, he recorded a number of complete works such as Schumann,
Beethoven, Brahms, Boccherini, Stamitz, and Martinu.
Christian Benda is Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Prague Sinfonia, an extension of the Prague Chamber Orchestra for a repertoire with conductor.
